Posted on: September 26, 2009No comments yet
This diagram is a flow chart showing key components to consider when trying to control and hold down your opponent. In various combination, the goal of these techniques is to:
- Block the near side hip. This helps keep your opponent’s knee from sliding in to reguard.
- Isolate and kill/control the near side arm.
- Isolate and control the far side arm
- Control the Head of your opponent
These key points will help you staple down and control your opponent from cross side.
Modified Knee on Belly – Game Plan

This diagram shows a sample game plan to use from the Modified Knee on Belly Top position. The movements, and submissions are all basic but require details on each and every aspect to complete them properly.
The modified knee on belly is a tight position where your knee slides across and down to the mat. That knee is used to keep the far side arm away from your opponent’s side. This position offers tight, crushing pressure, while allowing your hands freedom to attack.

This diagram shows a sample game plan to use from the Mount Top position. The movements, and submissions are all basic but require details on each and every aspect to complete them properly.
The Mount Position is the gold standard in Jiu-Jitsu. From here, we can completely dominate an opponent. This game plan goal is to start in the Mount, and from there, decide whether you are low (with Grapevines) or high mount. Most techniques require you to move into a Side Mount or Tight S Mount. The angles and pressure afforded from these positions allow us to constantly attack with the high percentage submissions outlined in the Flow Chart.

Illustrated, is a sketch of a standard gi with patch locations. Most of the patches have an adhesive back, but should be sewed on for a secure attachment. This is where patches should be placed on your gi.

Taking Notes
Posted on: February 23, 2009No comments yet
One of the most important (and easiest) ways to remember a technique or concept is to document it during or after class. This simple habit will embed the information in your mind and serve as a log, documenting your path in Jiu-Jitsu. Notes can be shorthand, simple, and to the point. The following example is a basic trap and roll (Upa) escape from the Mount bottom. The first section would be an example of notes taken quickly in class:

=====================================================================
When back at the computer, you can take notes (like above) and do a more detailed job to better help you remember a technique. This could look like this.
Indicator: Opponent Has Mount and Grabs Your Chest or Throat with One or Both Hands
Position: Mount Bottom
This technique requires you to trap your opponent’s arm and same side leg to perform a roll. This isolates or traps one side of your attacker, allowing you to perform an escape from the mount. To perform this technique:
- The attacker has mounted you and is grabbing your throat or shirt with one or both hands.
- Grab his right wrist with your right hand using a thumbless “monkey” grip.
- Grab his right elbow/tricep area with your left hand (full grip with thumb)
- Drive your left elbow against your attacker’s knee. This will help prevent him climbing high on the mount.
- Retract your left leg back (knee pointing up and slightly left). Your foot should trap the outside of the attacker’s right foot.
- With your right foot; Bridge straight up until you peak, bridge and turn your head on top of your left shoulder, and roll your attacker.
- While rolling, come to your knees and land in your opponent’s open guard.
Taking notes will guarantee you can keep track of your progress, while never forgetting a technique.
